To cooperate the NT South development and promotion of arts and cultural activities, Kwai Tsing Theatre opened in November 1999 and managed by Provisional Regional Council initially. Since the reorganization of government in 2000, Kwai Tsing Theatre became managed by new established Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

The main venues of Kwai Tsing Theatre include Auditorium and Exhibition Gallery. To meet the growing demand for small scale and experimental theatrical productions among local art groups, the Black Box Theatre was opened through the rebuilding of Exhibition Gallery in 2008, which is the first black box theatre at the LCSD's performance venues.

Auditorium is traditional proscenium theatre designed with 899 seats, including 625 seats in stalls and 274 seats in balcony. The theatre stage is equipped with stage wagon with revolving platform, power flying system with computerized control, electrically operated orchestra pit, convertible acoustic panel, etc, which can cater for orchestral concerts, dramas, Chinese operas, dance and assembly performances.

The Black Box Theatre is designed with variable seating formats for arena, thrust or transverse stage set-up, providing 130-seat to 160-seat capacities. It is suitable for small scale innovative theatre and dance productions.

Other facilities include a Lecture Room, a Dance Studio and a Rehearsal Room, providing venues for lectures, seminars, meetings, rehearsals or small scale activities.

Besides, open Plaza outside Theatre provides designated area for non-profit-making organizations to hold non-commercial activities, or to provide free entertainment programmes occasionally.
